Pediatric Dental Services
At Kamloops Pediatric Dentistry, we offer a full range of dental services tailored specifically to children, including those with special healthcare needs. Whether it’s your child’s very first check-up, or they need treatment for a cavity or dental emergency, we’re here to help every step of the way.
Building healthy smiles from the start
We follow the Canadian Academy of Pediatric Dentistry’s guidelines: your child’s first visit should be by age one or within 6 months of their first tooth coming in. Ongoing check-ups and cleanings every six months help monitor your child’s dental development and prevent problems before they start.
During these visits, we:
- Monitor growth and development
- Check for cavities and gum health
- Offer professional cleanings and fluoride treatments
- Use digital X-rays to look for underlying issues
A simple step toward cavity prevention
Sealants are a preventative treatment that protects your child’s teeth by covering deep grooves and crevices where food and plaque like to hide. This thin, clear coating makes teeth easier to clean and helps prevent decay. While sealants are elective, they can be an effective way to help keep your child’s teeth cavity-free. Sealants are durable and can last for years, providing long-lasting protection to help maintain a healthy smile.
Fixing little teeth with care
For small cavities, we use fillings to restore tooth health. However, sometimes a cavity is just too big for a filling to hold. In that case, we might recommend a crown, which is a full-coverage restoration that protects the tooth until it’s time for it to naturally fall out. Don’t worry—the baby tooth and the crown will come out together when it’s time!
We offer stainless steel (silver) and zirconia (white) crowns.
When a tooth needs to go
Sometimes, teeth need to be removed due to infection, trauma, extra teeth, or for orthodontic reasons. The procedure depends on which tooth is being removed and the age of your child. In some cases, a space maintainer may be recommended after an extraction to ensure proper alignment for permanent teeth.
Keeping smiles in line
If a baby tooth is lost too early, a space maintainer may be needed to hold space for the adult tooth. These small dental appliances are cemented into your child’s mouth to prevent crowding and ensure proper development. When the permanent tooth is ready to come in, we’ll remove the space maintainer.
Mild to Moderate Sedation in Office
Some children benefit from a little extra help to feel relaxed during their visit. We offer sedation options, including nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral sedation, to help your child stay calm and comfortable throughout their treatment.
Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective option that’s delivered through a small mask and wears off quickly, so your child can return to their regular activities right after their visit.
Dr. Jon will talk through your options with you and help you decide what’s best for your child.
Comprehensive care while your child sleeps
In some cases, general anesthesia is recommended for children who require more extensive dental care or additional support. Treatment takes place in a hospital setting and anesthesia is administered by a trained medical doctor, allowing our team to complete dental care safely while your child is asleep and closely monitored.
Fast, compassionate care — when it matters most
If your child experiences a dental injury such as fractures, cracks, or dislodged teeth, our doctor will assess the damage and provide the necessary treatment.
Please call us immediately if your child needs urgent dental care.
Facial swelling often indicates a dental infection, which requires immediate attention. If your child has swelling and dental pain, it’s important to see a dentist or doctor right away. During office hours, we offer same-day appointments for emergencies. For after-hours care, please refer to the details below.
In case of an after-hours emergency, please contact Kamloops Pediatric Dentistry at 778-471-1724. You can also visit the Emergency Department at Royal Inland Hospital.
We understand that some of our families travel from far and wide to visit us. To make things easier, we do our best to accommodate out-of-town patients by scheduling treatments on back-to-back days, whenever appropriate. During your consultation, we’ll review your child’s medical history, current health, and the type of treatment needed. These factors help us determine if sedation is a safe and suitable option for your child. It’s important to share any medical concerns with our team to ensure the best and safest care. If you’re traveling from out of town, be sure to ask our receptionists about special room rates at nearby hotels—we’re happy to help make your stay as convenient as possible.
At our office, we believe that every child deserves quality dental care, which is why we are fully handicap accessible. We strive to accommodate all patients with special needs and physical limitations, ensuring that each appointment is as smooth and comfortable as possible for both patients and their caregivers. If you have any specific concerns or requirements prior to your visit, please don’t hesitate to inform one of our team members. We’re here to help make your experience positive and stress-free!
